Another Las Vegas Guilty Plea

Every new guilty plea should bring a shout of joy from the thousands of elderly Las Vegas HOA members who lost their life savings and home equity when this cesspool of crooks decided to start draining their neighbors of their savings.

Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This week Arnold Myers, a former HOA board member and a phony straw buyer of an HOA home, pleaded guilty to fraud and corruption and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. He’s the 27th. The judge ordered him to pay $277,000 in restitution.

This crook whined that he’s battling skin cancer and will turn 79 in two weeks. He couldn’t attend a previous hearing because he also suffered from double pneumonia.

As Christians, we’re all supposed to forgive those who trespass against us.

But with organized crime suspects arrogantly claiming they robbed multiple homeowner associations in Nevada, ruining the lives of hundreds of fellow homeowners, some things are just so difficult to do.

Myers’ principle victims were the Jasmine, Palmilla, Chateau Versaille and Park Avenue Associations.

Rigging of HOA elections, dirty campaign tactics, stacking HOA boards with phony members, funneling HOA money to Organized Crime elements. Myers has been ordered to pay restitutution. Any guesses here? Will any victim see even a dime of restitution?

Chalk it up to HOA Stupidity

Everybody else has reported on this already, but I should at least get my take on the record. So here it is:

In Aurora, Colorado, a Homeowners Association is threatening to ruin the family of a three year old girl who uses colored chalk to draw flowers and hearts on the sidewalks in front of her home.

Seems that some wicked witch in the cul-de-sac complained that the chalk drawings were against the covenants and destroying the value of the neighborhood. The child, Emerson Cohen, is mystified at the dispute, but her mother is furious.

The Stapleton Master Association is furious because the HOA was originally identified as being a Stapleton Homeowners Association. They’re working overtime to lobby the media to say, “It’s not Stapleton, is an HOA within Stapleton. Additionally, Stapleton is saying “We have no rules against sidewalk chalk drawings by children. And the Master Association is pointing its collective finger/fingers? at a member HOA called “the Innovations and Courtyard Traditions at Stapleton Homeowners Association.”

Still, you’d think that Stapleton Master Association could show some leadership and throttle a few complainers by the necks. This little Nazi-like neighborhood is now in the national news for beating down a three-year-old girl whose artistic efforts were all going to be washed away in the first rain, anyway.

Yes, some people hate little children. Even worse, some people move into HOAs because they hate little children. They realize that a single complaint to the HOA board can shut down chalk drawings, lemonade stands, kids playing hopscotch on the sidewalk. Incredibly, a number of HOAs have even enacted rules that mandate that no children are allowed to play outside!

The hatred of little children is a serious disease. Sadly, when a diseased mind moves into an HOA, that hatred is toxic and communicable.

Here, the message is in big print: IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, DO NOT MOVE TO ANY STAPLETON NEIGHBORHOOD IN AURORA, COLORADO!

Can You Say “SUSPICIOUS?”

At long last a Texas HOA is getting some much-deserved attention. Sadly, it took a homeowners lawsuit to get the ball rolling.
Folks in the Sunchase HOA in Northeast Austin are wondering where a million bucks went. It just kind of wandered off someplace. It’s illegal for a Texas HOA not to have regular audits of their books. Of course, it’s also illegal to filch a million bucks, IF that’s what happened. And Sunchase hasn’t had an audit for at least five years.

The property manager, Nancy Thompson keeps the HOA’s money in several different banks. But for some reason, she won’t let board members or homeowners see any of her bank statements. Board members are also question why Thompson was given thousands of dollars in bonuses. Austin Police are sniffing around. Between them and the lawyers, we may see some future news stories.

Good reporting by Chris Willis of KXAN.

I’m in Love with Darcy Spears!

Darcy, you have done it again! You have located and exposed one of the worst HOA presidents in the country. I sincerely hope you’re winning a whole series of Emmy Awards for your HOA Hall of Shame feature on KTNV-TV in Las Vegas. Since I retired from the TV business four years ago I don’t have a chance to go back and emulate your reporting. But dang! Keep it up, girl!

For those not familiar with Darcy’s work, you owe it to yourselves to click on the link below. With perfect manners and charm, she picks out these slugs and losers and shows the world what life in an HOA can become. With the rampant organized corruption in Las Vegas homeowner associations, with the suicides that really don’t look like suicides, with the numbers of people who’ve seen their home values plummet up to 90%, you’ve gotta believe there’s a lot more subject matter for the HOA Hall of Shame series.

The FBI investigation in Las Vegas is going far too slowly. The FBI usually moves with lightning speed, but for some reason this investigation is just dragging. Maybe some of you Vegas homeowners who’ve lost your shirts to the Quon/Amesbury organized crime ring ought to be turning up the heat. Where are the judges and state legislators who were supposed to be indicted? How high up the political ladder does this corruption go?

Finally, when is the FBI going to take its new knowledge of HOA corruption and start hitting other cities? There’s not a city in the country that’s immune from the kind of crookedness the feds have uncovered in Las Vegas. Embezzlement, rampant racism, bribery, fixed court cases, theft, animal poisoning, vandalism, laundered money, death threats, murder: every one of those crimes is going on across America as gated neighborhoods continue to fester.

Now that the Internet has become the “Fifth Estate,” news about this scandal is finally leaking past the traditional media and making its way out to the public. Skeptical? That’s OK, I like skeptics. But just start Googling and the number of HOA crimes might begin to look a little scary to you.

By the way, here’s Darcy’s link:

Big Week in the Las Vegas HOA Scandal

As reported in the Las Vegas Review Journal, this should be an interesting week in the massive federal investigation of corruption in Las Vegas Homeowner Associations.  A gaggle of crooks will stand up, plead guilty in federal court, and promise to testify against co-conspirators…bad guys who worked their hearts out to plunder the life savings of thousands of Las Vegas homeowners.

Retired cops will plead guilty to having stacked the boards of HOAs, so insurance lawsuits could be funneled through a few select law firms and Las Vegas businessmen. Federal Judge James Mahan has vowed to keep the process open, so all citizens will be able to see and assess the corruption that existed at all levels of government.

Earlier news leaks promised that judges, legislators and people of all stripes would be exposed in this investigation. So far, we haven’t seen much of that. But corruption of this sort is like a stench. The smell rises to the top. Someone, somewhere at the top of government knew this degree of corruption was going on and either overlooked it or participated in it.

Pray that the federal prosecutors and FBI agents who represent you, don’t collapse under the weight of political pressure and just go after the little fish. It’s harder to reel in the whale, but the whale only survives because of all the little fish.

Highly questionable “suicides” marked the beginning of this case. Those deaths should always be kept at the top of readers’ minds.

Another Las Vegas Cop Bites the Dust in HOA Scam

It’s extremely difficult to celebrate when a cop goes down in a corruption scheme. All my life, I’ve been a reporter as I covered police officers working in extremely dangerous situations to protect all of us from the world’s evils. Over the years I’ve developed enormous respect for the profession, so each conviction of a cop gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Still, they have a special position of trust, and when a cop’s actions have created immeasurable suffering for others, he deserves the most severe kind of justice that can be meted out.

That said, a third cop in the Las Vegas Police Department has taken a guilty plea in the Las Vegas Homeowners Association scam. Federal investigators have poured into the valley over the past three years, trying to wrangle a massive corruption scheme that cost thousands of homeowners their money, their security, their homes, their retirements.

Captain Frank Sutton of the Vice and Narcotics Squad is the third cop to plead guilty. His plea was just unsealed by a Federal Court Judge. Four previous suspects in the probe committed “suicide,” including another police official. His is the 27th guilty plea in the case, and the Feds promise many more indictments of surprisingly high local and state officials.

Multiple civil lawsuits have been filed by homeowners who lost their life savings in the Las Vegas HOA scam, and those lawsuits could uncover information the federal investigators couldn’t get close to. But the Las Vegas HOA establishment continues to be in chaos, with many people unable to buy or sell with any level of confidence. Las Vegas housing, in a word, is toxic. You’d have more luck at the slots than in finding a good investment in Nevada housing.

Still, remember that Las Vegas is not the center of the HOA scandal. The scandal is nationwide. It affects every Homeowner’s Association in America. If that seems like a stretch, then just do a Google search on the number of embezzlements in the HOA system. You’ll find it tough to locate a single major city that hasn’t been hit with HOA corruption.

Caveat emptor.

What Went Down In Wisconsin

With what went down in Wisconsin on June 5th, one blogger who looks more and more precognizant is the webmaster behind RightToOwn.org.

A sea change is coming; at some point Americans are going to begin realizing that one of the biggest scams in history has been perpetrated against the typical suburban homeowner.  This societal shift will fundamentally change the way people look at the dollars they’ve poured into their investment homes.

One of the safest investments, we’ve always been told, is the money we put into our own homes. Home values will always go up, we’ve heard. You just can’t lose the money you’ve invested in your personal home. But homeowner ownership profits are just about as ephemeral as profits bet on the horses or the craps tables in Las Vegas. We just never believed it.

We’re all quickly learning that a single change in law or HOA covenants can determine whether or not all that equity in your home is worthless or not.

RightToOwn.org has a slightly different take as he compares the wild parallels between Right To Work states and the mystical Right to Own Your Own Home states. In Right To Work states, you make a voluntary choice whether to become members of an employment union or not.

In Right to Own States (which don’t really exist), you might get to voluntarily choose whether to join the local Homeowner Association. The nasty secret, of course, is the fact that if you make a decision to join the local HOA then you don’t really own anything at all. Your neighbors essentially own what you have. It’s insidious, and confusing enough for most homeowners who don’t understand the puzzle palace they’re entering.

When you agree to abide by an HOA’s covenants, you give away part of your soul on a vague promise that your property values will always be protected. The bottom line is that they are not protected.

Back to the Wisconsin (a non-right-to-work state), public employees did not have a choice whether to join a union. Just like an HOA, membership was mandatory. As a result, union leaders tried to overreach at the expense of all other Wisconsin workers. As we all saw in the election, government acted and a major of voters upheld its actions.  Right or wrong, the net salaries of all public service employees will soon be coming down. And it could spell the doom of public employee unions across the country.

In the housing sector, on the other hand, there may be a similar awakening at some point as Homeowners suddenly realize that the HOA industry, the lawyers, the managers, the hangers on are also overreaching. A growing movement is beginning to balk at the micromanaging, the mismanagement and abuse that are increasingly destroying access to the “American Dream.”
